ORIGINS

The origins of Highlander competition dates to the reign of King Malcom of Canmore in the eleventh century. King Malcolm had organized gatherings at Braemar where clansman competed in various athletic events (Brewster, Connell, and Page 2009, 275). It is believed that the competition originated as clan chiefs selected the strongest men for war; those who succeeded in the events led the war efforts (Fournier 105, 18). Through the centuries, word of mouth and newsletters were the only documented sources of the competitions.

It wasn’t until 1820 that an official traditional event was established in Scotland. The annual event emerged as an important community event throughout Scotland. Eventually, the competitions influenced the start of entire Highlander festivals. During the festivals Tartan clans, made up of extended families competed in the games, shared food and drink, sang songs, and shared unique dances (Brewster, Connell, and Page 2009, 277).
